The results of a recent survey suggest that some men may be at a reduced risk of erectile dysfunction.
In an effort to combat the growing problem of ED, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced Thursday it is requiring an increase in the dosage of Viagra, the popular brand name for sildenafil citrate, to ensure patients will be able to get the drug at a lower price.
The drug, sold under the brand name Cialis, is an option for those looking to treat erectile dysfunction or other conditions. Its maker, Pfizer, is also making available generic versions of the drug.
Viagra and its generic version, Cialis, are FDA-approved for erectile dysfunction. But in recent months, some men who have used Viagra for recreational purposes have begun using the little blue pill for ED.
Dr. Steven Nissen, M. D., director of the Center for Sexual Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said some men taking the pill, especially those who take Viagra regularly, may not be able to get the drug at a lower price.
"In some cases, we are seeing a reduction in price," Nissen said.
"There's a lot of new data that shows that a lower price for erectile dysfunction drugs may be more effective than Viagra."
But Nissen said most men who used the pill were able to get the medication at a lower price, and some men who did not need the pill were willing to pay more.
"We think that is a common misconception," Nissen said. "We think there's a reason why a certain percentage of men who take a pill do not need it."
Stephen Schubert, a cardiologist at Northwestern Medical Center in Chicago, said the number of men who had taken the drug since the beginning of last year was still not very large.
"Some men are willing to pay the full price for the drug because they've heard of their own success," Schubert said. "It has to be taken for a long time."
Schubert, who was not involved in the research, said there are several ways men might be able to make the drug cheaper. Viagra, he said, should be taken before sex because it can decrease blood flow to the penis, and the pill can increase blood pressure.
Some men may also be able to afford the lower price of the pill if they are able to afford the full benefit, Schubert said. But he said men who are willing to pay the full price, he said, should be able to get the pills at a fraction of the price they would pay for the brand-name drug.
"It should be taken regularly," Schubert said.
Christopher Fugh-Menges, a cardiologist at Northwestern University who has been involved in the drug research, said the FDA has made no specific recommendations about how men might be able to get the drug if they are willing to pay the full price.
"This has not been done so far," Fugh-Menges said.
